Dr Sumit Yadav


Dr Sumit Yadav is the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at both The Mater Hospital in Townsville and The Townsville Hospital which is affiliated with James Cook University. He is also the Supervisor of training for Cardiothoracic Surgery with RACS. He is a Senior Lecturer at James Cook University and a committee member for ANZCTS database. Dr Yadav specialises in heart and lung surgery performing up to 225 cardiac procedures and 150 lung operations each year.

Dr Yadav completed his training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Fremantle Hospital and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth and later moved to The Prince Charles Hospital Brisbane for experience in cardiac transplant. He became a Fellow of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2007.

Dr Yadav spent time in Universitat Leipzig Herzzentrum (University of Leipzig Heart Centre) in Leipzig, Germany in 2012 learning minimally invasive mitral valve surgery. He has been performing this surgery with an experienced team at The Townsville Hospital since October 2012.

Dr Yadav’s surgical interests include minimally invasive mitral valve and aortic valve surgery including sutureless valves. He is also a minimally invasive thoracic surgeon doing VATS lobectomies. He is an author of peer-reviewed papers and has contributed to the chapter in the textbook. He is a reviewer for a number of international peer-reviewed journals.
