Dr Sumit Yadav

Dr Sumit Yadav is a Specialist Cardiothoracic Surgeon who is working in North Queensland since 2008. Dr Yadav specialises in heart and lung surgery performing over 250 Heart and lung operations each year. He does clinics in Cairns , Townsville and Mackay.
Dr Yadav completed his training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Fremantle Hospital and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth and later moved to The Prince Charles Hospital Brisbane for experience in cardiac transplant. He became a Fellow of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2007. He has worked as Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Mater Hospital in Townsville and The Townsville University Hospital between 2014-24.
Dr Yadav did a visiting fellowship in Universitat Leipzig Herzzentrum (University of Leipzig Heart Centre) Leipzig, Germany in 2012 learning minimally invasive mitral valve surgery. He did the first Minimally invasive Mitral Valve repair (Key hole repair) in North Queensland in 2012 and has done over 400 Minimally invasive valve surgeries. In 2018 He did a structural heart Fellowship from University Hospital Zurich and started a TAVI programme in Townsville University Hospital in 2018 and has experience of over 100 TAVI procedures.
Dr Yadav’s surgical interests include Total arterial revascularisation, minimally invasive mitral valve and aortic valve surgery including sutureless valves. He is also a minimally invasive thoracic surgeon doing VATS lobectomies. He is an author of peer-reviewed papers and has contributed to the chapter in the textbook. He is a reviewer for a number of international peer-reviewed journals.
He has been the Supervisor of training for Cardiothoracic Surgery with RACS for over 9 years. He has been a committee member for ANZCTS database. He is an Associate Professor at The James Cook University.
